Social Justice

Social justiceWhen you join us one Sunday evening for worship you may notice that we do things a little differently from many churches.
.
.
If you come early so you can chat with people over a cup of tea, coffee or cocoa, you will see that we don’t use styrofoam coffee cups that are thrown away after a single use. Our coffee cups are ceramic and we use them over and over again.  The stirrer sticks for stirring your coffee are not plastic, which has a long half-life in the environment, but are made of wood.  Whether you drink tea, coffee or cocoa, you can rest assured that it will be a fair-trade product.  You will notice that unwanted bulletins and other paper products are not thrown in the trash, but are collected for recycling.  The recycling basket is right next to the offering basket, that is how important we consider recycling to be!

Our concern for the environment is simply one aspect of a deep and burning commitment to social justice.  Our pastor preaches and teaches about issues of social justice, ranging from exclusion and bigotry to economic oppression and environmental justice. You can hear sermons from The University Church here.

Join us and bring your friends for a meal and conversation about a timely social justice issue. Topics and locations vary from month to month. Here are some photographs from one of our Conversations Over Dinner, held at The Spaghetti Warehouse in Toledo, at which the topic for discussion was “Same-sex Marriage”. The questions that we discussed can be found on our blog.
